Sustainability

In today's world, the conversation around sustainability is more important than ever. Supporting brands that prioritize sustainability is crucial. When you choose to purchase from companies that are committed to environmentally friendly practices, you are voting for a greener future. Every effort counts in creating a more sustainable world!

The Ocean Pollution Problem:

An estimated 8 million tons of post-consumer waste and fish nets enter into our ocean every year. These plastics harm our ecosystems by ingestion, entanglement and habitat destruction. These plastics can take thousands of years to decompose into microplastics, which can also harm humans by making their way into the food chain. At the current pollution rate, our oceans could house more plastic than fish by 2050.

Our swimwear fabrics are recycled from salvaged fishing nets and post-consumer waste. Our fabric dyes are OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified to ensure they meet the highest environmental standards.

The Landfill Problem:

Landfills are designed to be a last resort for waste disposal. They often become a significant source of pollution and environmental degradation. When waste is buried in landfills, it can take centuries to decompose. This process releases harmful gases that contribute to climate change. Additionally, leachate, a toxic liquid that forms when waste breaks down, can contaminate soil and groundwater.

The first step is to reduce the amount of waste we generate. This involves making conscious choices about the products we buy and the packaging they come in. We operate 100% free of single use plastic. Each of our products are packaged in a 100% biodegradable bag capable of decomposing within a few days. We ship all of our orders in compostable bags.

Our products are designed to last. We are NOT fast fashion! Creating products that are designed to last long term means our products don't end up in landfills after one wear.

The Emission Problem:

The textile industry accounts for almost 10% of the world's Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Manufacturing with recycled materials reduces carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to manufacturing new fabric. Manufacturing with recycled materials requires less energy  and less water to manufacture. Using recycled materials diverts waste from our landfills and lowers our reliance on manufacturing new materials.

The Harsh Chemicals Problem:

Many traditional swimwear fabrics contain carcinogens, toxins, hormone disruptors, and forever chemicals. These harmful substances are proven to show health impacts with both short-term and prolonged exposure. Here at arkyn, we are determined to provide swimwear that doesn't contain these harmful substances.

All of our fabrics and dyes are OEKO-Tex Standard 100 Certified, which means our products are free of harmful substances such as:

  • PFAS/PFCS - linked to various cancers and thyroid disease
  • Heavy metals like lead, arsenic and cadmium - linked to brain damage, kidney and liver damage, and reproductive issues
  • Pesticides - linked to various cancers, respiratory problems and potentially autism
  • Flame retardants - linked to hormone disruption, cancers, and developmental problems
  • Formaldehyde - linked to asthma, nausea, cancer and dermatitis
  • Phthalates - linked to hormonal imbalances, irregular cycles, reproductive issues and developmental problems
  • Azo dyes - linked to skin and eye irritation
  • VOCs - linked to headaches, nausea, respiratory problems, and cancer
  • Chlorinated phenols - linked to respiratory irritation, reproductive problems and neurological problems
